Sounds like either the sensor is going belly up, or, your check valve is clogged.

Get rid of the check valve. You will find it in the trans line, up by the radiator, goes to the bottom of the radiator trans cooler. Just yank the line that is in there now, (flare nut on one side, dodge specialty connector on the other, 3/8ths, can get the release tool from any parts store.) and replace it with a length of hose, and some hose clamps. (make sure you get the right type of line.... needs to be able to tolerate trans fluid.)

Check valve should go regardless of what else you do.

See if that doesn't improve its attitude any.

What does your fluid look/smell like? (although, ATF +4, those are supposedly meaningless.....)

If the trans is still behaving itself, figger out why the temp code is being set. (P0711) If the sensor, or the circuit is causing trouble, anything else that it tells you is suspect.

Solve that one first. If the wiring all looks ok, replace the sensor. While you have the pan down, do the filter (you don't get a choice on the fluid. ) and adjust the bands while you are at it.

i threw a trans temp sensore code and since it was cheap i replaced it and the code went away. I wouldnt change the trans fluid! this def might cause slipping that wasnt there to begin with! you will lose some trans fluid but not all of it. Also, if you do buy a new sensor dont buy the one from auto zone or advance, its the wrong part! go to the dealer! Most likely they will have it in stock! i have a 96 and i got lucky

Gov pressure sensor inside the tranny doubles as the temp sensor on 46re's.
