My 98 Ram has 191,000 miles and when I shift through my gears P R D doesnt matter which order, there is this really loud clunking sound coming from the rear differential. My u-joints are fine, but I took it to a mechanic and he put all new master bearing set, clutch kit, axle seals and bearings in it. Any help would be much appreciated. There seems to be an awful lot of slop there...... and this is after the rebuild? I would be looking real hard at backlash, I think it is set to wide, so, too much slop between the pinion, and ring gear.

 

When I am coming to a stop it clunks really bad and when I take off it clunks again. He said that he rebuilt the rear differential 9 1/4 trac lock 3.90 ratio. I paid a lot of money for this to get fixed and it does the exact same thing as when I brought it there. I am going to be taking it back.

 

i;m still debating doing mine or paying a rearend and driveline specific shop the $225 bucks they want to install my locker, theres alot to get wrong , crush sleeve for pinion , bearing preload, and backlash, let us know what they say
