Default A/C Clutch Fuse Keeps Blowing

99 1500...A/C was running great, blowing cold then one day stopped blowing cold. Checked the relay and relay was fine, then checked the fuse for the a/c clutch and noticed it was blown.

Replaced the fuse and everything ran fine, blew cold...then the next day stopped blowing cold again. Checked and the fuse was blown again. Now everytime I replace the fuse it immediately pops the fuse.

Don't want to have to replace the entire compressor if it runs fine...can I just replace the clutch? Or do I have another problem?

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you got yourself a short-to-ground somewhere after the fuse but before the a/c clutch. You're going to need a volt meter, a 6-pack, and a dog that doesnt mind being cussed at.

Unplug the wire to the clutch and replace the fuse. If the fuse doesn't blow the rest of your wiring is ok. Now plug the clutch wire back in, if it blows the clutch is shorted.

Ok...unplugged the connector at the clutch and the fuse did NOT blow. Plugged it back in and the fuse blew.

So either the clutch is shorted or the wire from the connector to the clutch is shorting to ground??

Suggestions on next steps???

Check resistance across the terminals on the A/C clutch. I think 5 ohms is correct? If you get zero..... replace the clutch.

No resistance at the clutch.

Next question...where can I find a clutch? I see the bearings and removal tools online but I can't seem to find the clutch plate itself???

Comes as an assembly I do believe. Should be able to get one from advance, or napa, or whomever your favorite local auto parts store is.

That's the problem...the only thing I can find is a clutch bearing on autozone's site but I did find this on ebay...

Would that work?

Looks like it, maybe..... Might wanna call your local parts store, and ask 'em if they have/can get what you need.
