now that the weather is starting too get nice out i want too change my trany fluid.. is there anything else i should do while im in there?

 

Fluid, filter, adjust the bands, eliminate the check valve (up by the radiator), aux cooler? external filter?

 

yes im going to change the filter as well.. id love to put a cooler and temp guage. ive heard of adjusting the bands. is there a diy on this? could someone fill me in on how to adjust them?

 

Grab the service manual. You need a GOOD inch pound torque wrench to adjust the bands. Let me put emphasis on a Good torque wrench. Not the cheap Harbor Freight special because then you will be out $1400 for a transmission, like I was. Did I mention that you need a good torque wrench?

Make sure you get a good filter to, like a WIX. The crappy filter that you can get at AutoZone doesnt compare to the WIX. I also suggest getting a drain plug for the pan. Best $10 you will ever spend. And ATF+4 is your friend.

After you have the pan off, let the fluid drain for a while, like overnight or a day to get the most out.

Oh yeah, did I mention that you need a good torque wrench?

 

Plumb in a remote filter in the coolant line, in the flow between the transmission and cooler -- the one that has the check valve in it. It'll not only trap more crap than the internal filter is designed to stop so you'll never have to change the internal filter again, it'll give you back the anti-drainback feature that goes away when you (very wisely) remove the check valve.

Oh, and if you don't have one, buy really good inch-pound torque wrench.

 

just make sure you take your time if your going to adjust the bands and all, dont wanna mess anything up, oh and get a good INCH pound torque wrench...

 

okay so a good INCH pound tourqe wrench got it... what about the soliniod should i also replace that as well while im in there?

 

If they aren't giving you problems, don't worry about it. You could possibly drop 'em, and inspect though. If they look questionable (whatever that looks like...) go ahead and replace 'em. Stay away from the reman units though.

 

If I was or had to put in a new Govenor pressure solenoid, I'd put in the GM-style one that MonteC posted.

 

yes i read of the gm soleniod.. the tranny just turn over 1000000 miles along with the rest of the truck haha. ive personally never changed the tranny fluid and since i didnt buy it new im not even sure if its ever been changed....
