What automatic tranny should I put in my 98 5.9 4x4?
When I start my truck and shift into R my RPM's go up and then come back down. It does it when I shift from R to D as well. I don't know if that is normal or if my tranny is going out. It also clunks really loud when I shift from P to R and from R to D and from D to R. My truck does have over 190,000 miles but I am not sure if the tranny has ever been worked on by the previous owner. If my tranny is going bad, do you recommend a certain kind to put in there? I can buy one at AutoZone for $2,140 with a $500 core value. I do not do mudding or off roading at all, if that makes a difference. Please let me know, thanks!
A bit of an rpm flare when shifting from one gear, thru neutral, is normal. The clunk, however, is not. Have a look at your u-joints, if those are ok, better have a look at the output shaft of the t-case. Snap-ring might have abandoned shaft.
That clunking could be as simple as a failed u-joint, and might just be wear in the differential if it's not a u-joint. It's probably not the transmission.
If you haven't yet ripped out the anti-drainback check valve, do that soon.
If you find yourself in need of an automatic transmission: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm (PATC) is the place to get it. Their level two Viper is $2299 with no core exchange, and is a much higher quality unit than anything you'll get from an auto parts store. Freight might be free, might go as high as $165. The warranty is only six months, but the transmission will have been dyno tested at least twice before it gets crated up for shipping so you're not very likely to have a failure during the time/mileage of the warranty some random parts store would offer anyway.

The clunk from park to reverse is normal. Its the nature of the beast. Read:

The new trans from AutoZone is a rip off, especially compared to the price of the PATC Viper transmission.

Checked the fluid and it is right where it should be. Checked u-joints and they are just fine. I will check the transfer case output shaft but one thing that I saw is leaking a very minimal amount of fluid and it is coming from the rubber boot at the end of the transfer case that's connected to the driveshaft, maybe that is the output shaft? If my tranny does end up kicking the can, I want to get one with a warranty just to be sure.
