would the mounting bracket also have to be changed from 1500 to 2500 calipers?

I don't think if you went to the LD 3/4 ton calipers, you would have to change anything, I do believe they are a direct bolt on.

i just picked up a set of 2001 ram 2500 calipers and pads....they dont match up to the mounts that are on there now. It seems as though the mount would have to be wider or something.

The light duty 3/4 tons were still Dana 44's like ours, you got calipers off of a Dana 60 that's why they won't fit. Uh well anything can be made to fit lol.

Thats because 01 2500 0R 15OO came with dual piston calipers in either flavor D60 OR D44 and will not fit .... and down D44(S). Wonder what year(s) was the change in?

00 and 01 have dual piston calipers and different steering knuckle and/or mounting pattern.

I have an 01 and it has rear drums. So it is a 00.5 I guess. (It was bought in 2000, but was listed as a 2001 model, so it was one of the first "2001" models)
