Rebuild would be better but if you could find one it'd be cheaper. There's probably 5 of them in one of the local pull a parts.

I went and got some prices today. without the garage looking at it they say between 600-1000 to rebuild. I found a detailed article of the rebuild and to be honest it seems like i would be biting off a bit more than i can chew. Also its a work truck so kind of need it done right.

Question: A couple of the teeth on the pinion are chipped that does indicate that it is not good and a new one should be put in right? I know thats prob a stupid question but just wanted to make sure that i just cant put new spider gears and shaft into it and be on my way.

Anyways again thanks for all the advice. also i would post pictures but the forum isnt letting me post anymore than the ones i have already up.

What are they doing for that fat pile of cash? Does that include parts? If it does, it's not a 'bad' deal...... depending on what parts they want to toss in there.

@heyyou yea the guy i spoke with at the shop said 6-8 to rebuild it including parts and if the ring and pinion need to be replaced add another 250. So i am figuring on the low end 600 on the high around a 1000.

The only thing that is making me wonder is if its just the spiders gears and the shaft, that i can pick up for under a buck fifty and do myself i much rather do that.

If you have chunks taken out of the ring gear..... that ain't good. Chances are the pinion is gonna be tweaked as well. Not sure if you can even SEE that part... can you post a pic of the ring gear? Upload pics to someplace like photobucket, or imageshack, and then just use image tags to show the pics in your post.

i can tell you right now, that those gears will have wear yes, but if they are chipped like im talk CHIpped, not a chip the size of a piece of sand, but like a human tooth size chipped, then yea get a new one, be worth it to replace it now rather then later have the pinion chip away more to the point it either locks up and ****s ur spider gears again or something worst, like have a whole drive line snap issue on your hands. i would say cough up the 1k and get it all redone, i had to have all of mine redone, plus the driveshafts, plus the rebuild on tranny all at once, and i have had no issues. that 1k for all ur gears and install thats not bad bro. just make sure when you get it done and you leave, listen for any whine, and if u hear some, id turn right back around and tell them to adjust it right. just my 2 cents

Agreed with all said here, there was 0 whine when my 4.88s where put in and mine was around 1200 bucks. Ill seriously send you pics and give you specs on my ring gear compared to any other place I will let you have them. This might be sketchy to you but I sir, am no liar, these stock gears where very well kept.. Just lemme know what you wanna do or if you got some idea haha.
