Is a trans Cooler all I need to tow between 2-6k lbs in OD? I Hate the 3k rpm revs in 3rd and I also hate the 9.5mpg,

I think the issue is a lack of lubrication of the OD unit when subjected to high loads. A cooler will help keep temps down but there needs to be more flow through the OD unit itself. Something like a sonnax sure cure may help.

a tranny cooler AND 5.88 gears.

towing that much weight in OD is asking for your tranny to go.

1900 for a new tranny, or a few more dollars in gas. Also, it is not advised that you tow going more than 65 MPH anyway. So unless you are going 80MPH, you should not be over 3K.

It is typically not advisable to tow in any gear ratio greater than 1:1. The ability to push the engine past the transmission can handle will always exist

Don't.

The od unit in these trannies is notorious for overheating anyway... why would you want to tow with it?

there is a fix for the oiling/cooling problem, which would probably let you tow light loads in OD. it involves some extra holes or different parts or something...., plus a trans cooler. heavy loads should not use OD.

I thought that OD was ok to use, as long as the trans was not "hunting" between 3rd and OD. I have towed my 2K-ish LB pop-up with about 1000 lbs in the bed a few times and did use OD.
Hearing that I shouldn't tow at all with OD is bad news for me.
