Default While I'm at It...

So I've decided to go ahead with tackling a plenum repair, and at the same time a kegger mod, 180 thermostat, cap, rotor, wires...

Can anyone think of anything else I should do while I'm at it???

It's generally accepted as being a good time to do the timing chain as well.

Another good question would be... how can I tell if my TB has an EGR sensor? I don't think mine does... just wondering because I have access to a couple of scrap-yard TB's. One has EGR, one does not.

?? Pictures anyone?

Um... I dont think any of the TB's on these trucks have an "egr sensor".... for that matter, I've never heard of an egr sensor on any vehicle.... I might be wrong though

i assume your doing the plenum due to it leaking....but, it would be a great idea to do the 02 sensors because the plenum can leave a carbon build up on it, thus ruining the sensor, and getting wack readings, and wack mpgs

I would say timing chain would depend largely on the mileage. When I did my plenum pan gasket, I only had 80K on the truck and didn't see the point of doing the timing chain at that point.

I would, however, recommend changing the water pump while you're there. You have to remove everything for the plenum pan gasket change that you would have to pull off to change the water pump anyway. It's like an additional (7) bolts if I recall.

Just a thought--

Dave

I'm going forward with the plenum because I've notice some oil residue inside the TB. I also did the "magnet test" and know that the repair has never been done. Even if it winds up being a preventative step, from everything I've heard it seems like the thing to do.

And, I have been getting what I consider to be whacked MPG's, so was was going to do the O2's as well. Also the chain. Any particular reason you're suggesting the water pump?

Can you all think of any goofy specialty tools I might need for all of this? I have access to just about anything. Just wondering.

Only really 'special' tool you need is a puller for the harmonic damper. Maybe a gear puller for the crank gear.... (I didn't need one....)

Water pump has to come off to get to the timing chain. If it is original, might just as well replace it while its off.
