Default Towing Question for the V6 Crowd

I will be moving from Stillwater, OK to Albuquerque, NM in a couple of months. I will most likely be renting a 5x8 cargo trailer from uhaul and then will drive straight across I40. The only thing that my 01 8ft box v6 has pulled for a long distance is a wave runner. The wave runner did not phase the truck any or decrease the gas mileage much. I am mainly wanting to know what kind of gas mileage drop I will be looking at. I know going up the mountain is going to suck but it will be better in my ram then my 2.2L s10.

One piece of advice I will give you: keep OD off, even in flat areas. These trannies are not designed to tow ANYTHING in OD, and if you do so, it will burn them up.

Are you suggesting that I should change the fluid before or after the move?

I will do a fluid/filter change before I go then. Too bad I dont really have the money to add a remote transmission filter, delete the check valve, and add a universal drain plug to my pan. Maybe next time. Just out of curiosity could I use a trans-dapt 1028 plate with 1/2 mip to 3/8 barb fittings to add a remote filter. No one in town carries a inexpensive remote filter kit and buying this plate off of amazon and building the lines seems like the cheapest way for me to build a remote filter kit.

Definitely do this. It's on my to do list, especially since I tow a 3,500lb boat in the summer. That's not counting the 75 gallons of gas it holds or trailer weight. It's probably close to 5,000lbs when all is said and done.

Ok next question. Is the filter for the 42re the same as the filter for a 46re. The part stores here in down are listing the same filter kit for both transmissions. I really dont want to buy it and then get the pan off and then have the wrong filter/gasket. Another question when you all change your rear diff oil do you use a flat gasket on the cover or rtv?

Some kits are the same. IIRC, the filters are identical, and the kits come with two gaskets. One gasket fits the 42RE, one fits the 46RE (they have different shaped pans).
