Default Tranny pooping out on me?

So I have read a whole bunch of threads on here, and still havent been able to find with certainty that my tranny should be r+r'd. It seems to be having trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd sometimes, and almost always doesnt wanna shift from 2nd to 3rd unless I play with the shifter. It seems to hop a little bit when sitting at idle at a stop sign or light sometimes. And also sounds a little whiny when I'm at a drive-thru right up next to a building where I can hear the echo off the brick or concrete. I just don't wanna take it out if you guys think it's not needed. I've got gobbell1's pdf file and still trying to get my hands on his 282MB video, but no luck so far. Any input would be greatly appreciated because I'd love to be able to take my quads to the mountains this summer and go riding. I've never worked on trannys before besides in atv's and dirtbikes, but I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Done timing belts and clutches in everything from Audi's to Honda's and Toyota's. Just a little history about my mechanical abilities.
Also the truck is a 01' 1500 5.9 46RE Sport 35x12.50 BFG All Terrain KO's
Thanks again in advance for any and all constructive input.

Check fluid level. (In Neutral....)

Check TV cable adjustment.

If those don't help.... Drop the pan, change fluid and filter, and adjust the bands. have a look at the governor pressure solenoid while you are in there. If it is clogged up with crud, either clean it, or replace it.
