5.2 tranny issues. how long do i have?
I have a 01 5.2 sport 1500. a few years ago i was delivering some product in a busy part of town and i had to cross a busy street. i did a break stand at around 3K rpm to jolt me across the intersection faster. when i floored it i lost alot of power and the check engine light came on. after restarting the truck it went off and i noticed no further issues.
a year after that i was driving a distance and after 100 miles or so at 80Mph i noticed the tranny to start to slip. the tack would jump a few hundred RPM and i could feel the truck slow ever so slightly before the revs dropped back down to a normal speed. it would repeat this behavior 1 or 2 times every 40 min. the switch in rpm lasts about 2 seconds. (it still does this today). about a year later my check engine light came on out of the blue and i noticed a lack of power from time to time when driving from a stop.
after driving cross country i changed my tranny fluid and found about 1/4 to 1/3 of a snap ring in my tranny pan. there were no other large parts or filings in the pan. the fluid was brown ish and smelt alittle burnt. i added transX at this point and mopar fluid.
my truck would at times drive with direct power to the wheels (really throw you back in your seat if you floor it) and rev very high. just like when O/D is turned off. other times when i go from a stop it feels like im towing a 5th wheel and the engine never goes above about 3100 rpm. it seems to be random as to which i get.
about a year after that it stopped giving me the fast response and now i pretty much get only the sluggish start speed. if im already moving say at 20, 30 or 80Mph i can floor it and get lots of power. its only if im stopped that it feels sluggish. also when i am stopped the truck will jolt forward for a brief second. just like it would if it were a manual and i dropped it in gear with out opening the clutch first. enough to make the truck rock while holding the breaks. it does this once every 10 min or so at a stand still.
what do you think the snap ring was from? the truck has done over 50K miles from the time i think the ring broke and i want to get another 6-8 months out of this truck before it dies. do you think ive got that much time?
also ive been using the truck for pulling stumps and such over the past few months and 4 low in 2nd still gives me full and hard power. after a hard day of stump pulling the check engine light went off for about 2 weeks.
thanks.

the erratic shifting is likely from filings that are clogging your govenor pressure sensor and solenoid... its a common failure on our trucks and much cheaper to fix than your thinking..(search it here). being that their was a year between your first bad experience and the next Im gonna assume and guess it was a fluke and the broke snap ring isnt really effecting anything. if you use a code reader you may find a code or two pionting to the fore mentioned problem I stated above.
Snap ring was part of the O/D assembly. That is bad. I am actually surprised it has lasted this long.
If you still have the check valve in the trans cooler line up by the radiator, get rid of it.
How long will it last? Notta clue. With the broken snap ring, it might last your six months you are hoping for, or, it might crap out on your next trip.

well ill just play it by ear then and see what happens. when/if it dies it has a rebuilt rear end with about 10K on it. if anyone needs a 9.25, 3.55 YG with auburn gear limited slip. id like to sell it for around 1K
i agree! my 95 ram did not give me any warning that there was transmission problems brewing, i was driving to pick my son up from the wicked wich of the northwest when it started to act up, after i had got my son from that broad and i was driving back to my house then my transmission just shut down slipped out of gear and started whining really loud that truck cost me 2,000 bucks to get the tranny rebuilt and there are still things that i need to do to it so i can prolong the life of that transmission! if i was you find a transmission shop and have it looked at it could be something simple and if you catch it early enough hopefully you wont end up in my boat!!
i am buying a new cummins 2500 to rebuild from the frame up for off road play and my driver so i really dont care much about the tranny ****ting out on me. that said i was offered a rebuild kit from an old auto teacher who gets employee at dodge for about 400 bucks. if i wanted to rebuild it myself, which from what ive been reading about the trannys that go into the 1500 sports... i would be better off taking a tranny out of a scooter to replace the POS.
as it stands the truck has done about a year hauling stuff for circuit city before they died. then it went from MN to WA, spent a year towing trailers out there then drove the return trip back here to MN. it was fully loaded with alittle over half a ton on both trips to and back from WA. (oddly enough.. idk of this is coincidence or if there is a weight sensor i dont know about BUT. when the truck is fully loaded in the bed it drives and revs like O/D is off. the OD would not turn off for a year and a half before i loaded her up so either the truck knew it was fully loaded and didnt want to die or im just very lucky o.O). since then its been uprooting stumps and being my daily driver untill this day. the tranny has not shown any signs of getting worse or increased slippage. also ive been getting more MPG now that the engine wont rev past 3K off the line and i accelerate like a grandma.
