Default Drilling into my Intake manifold?????

So after some research I have found out that 98-01 small blocks have only 1 Coolant Temp Sensor. It does both the PCM and the Gauge. However 94-97 have 2. One for the PCM and the other is for the Gauge.

My truck is a 97. The prior owner replaced the motor with one that is 98+ so I only have 1 location for a Coolant Temp Sensor. I have the PCM sensor in the spot available behind the alternator but now i dont have a Temp gauge.

Should I drill into the spot on the intake manifold that is clearly cast to have a hole drilled and tapped in it?
Or do you guys have another idea of how i can get my temp gauge working again?

I don't want to replace the whole manifold because i have already done the Hughes plate on this one, and I dont really want to take the whole top of the motor appart just to get a gauge working.

Thanks everyone

Hm, it'd be tough to tap a good hole without taking the manifold off. Run the risk of getting shavings in there too. I wonder if you couldn't put the sensor into a convenient hose location.

Wouldn't you take it off to drill the hole anyways? You don't want metal shavings to fall down in the motor

He would just be drilling into the water passage on the manifold. Not that big of a deal, so long as the bulk of the shavings get cleaned out.

You can drill it on the block so long as you have the room to drill and tap it straight.

The coolant in the engine will actually flush the shavings out.

You can certainly tap it, but putting one of those couples with a temperature sensor/sender makes a lot more sense. It would take a quarter of the time and be just as accurate.

Do you mean just tee off of a coolant hose for the gauge?
