Default 97 ram vss problem, please help!!!

first off i am new to the forum, so i thank all in advance for the help i hope to get and am looking forward to getting help and helping others on here as well
ok i have a 97 ram 1500 4x4, it keeps throwing a code 15 (vehicle speed sensor- no signal under load) i siwtched it wih another sensor i had lying around and with it in there i had no speedo and it was in what i hear most people call limp mode (not shifting past 2nd gear with a rpm limiter) it set off the code also after i hit about 30 mph maybe.
I put the original sensor back in it, reset the computer, took it for a ride, it did the same thing but my speedo works along with the cruise control, then after a bit of driving it strted shifting, kinda late.....but shifts , then i went back to the house parked for a bit tried again and then it wouldn't shift again
so basicaly i need some help here, i was under the impression that if my vss was bad i would have no speedo/cruise and a code 15 and if the speedo did work it would be erratic
please someone help me out i want to get my truck on the road, any suggestions would help

also i allready checked the wires from the vss leading to the computer, they are intact, i checked them with a continuity test

The only thing of any help I can say is, check your truck with a OBD II scanner. I'm only assuming that since you said "code 15" and that's a key dance code. Those codes are VERY vague so it's wise to get a more specific code. Sorry I couldn't offer any more specific help. Welcome to the DF!!!

Try a new one, they aren't that expensive. The "one that was lying around" was probably lying around for a reason.

You do know that the speed sensor is offset right. I did this on mine and couldn't figure out what I did. You have to put the shortest side towards the output shaft.

i appreciate your suggestion, i thought of that but to do it i would have to find someone close to me with a scanner to let me use, or run it for me, i don't have the money to go out and buy one.
i thank you for the warm welcome

no offence by any means, but it was lying around because i got 2 trucks at once, so i took it off the other truck to see if i had simalar resultes, as far as cheap...$30 bucks aint cheap for somethin that might not fix my problem, then being an electronic part im sure once i use it and cut off my old vss harness to replace with the new (updated) harness they come with i can not return it, so im out 30 and still not driving my truck,
and im my testing the one (lying arround) was bad i had no speedo and the shifting problem, so in my assumtions i would guess the other one is good, i have speedo and cruise, and the speedo don't jump around or shake or anything, i would guess if the sensor was bad it would be sending out an odd signal or something wich would show on the speedometer as (shaking, jumping, maybe not work at all in places), thanks for the idea though

Most auto parts stores will let you use one for free.... some will even pull the codes for you.

i am not for sure if you are aware of this or not but in some instances the shortes side doesn't go towords the output shaft, depending on wich gear you have on the vss adaptor you have to line up wich gear rang you have with the little raised *** on the bottom of the hole it slides into, and i have it set for the gear i have on the end of it, thaks for the idea thoug, but i allready found that out the had way after searching forums and web pages for like 2-3 days lol

No worries man, lying around seemed to imply that you just had it in the shop on a shelf somewhere. Didn't realize it came off of another truck.

So, just to clarify, the "lying around" vss works in the other truck, but not in the one you tested it out in?
