ok i did the search. i have the FSM
in the FSM it said to use silcone rubber sealant on the diff cover. at the parts house they said to use a gasket.
also is 90 wt the right the right gear oil i have a 95 ram 2 WD. 9.25 diff. open.
and how high to fill it i have read from 5/8" below plug to bottom of plug

i have never ever seen a real gasket used. thats what the RTV silicone is for, its a gasket maker basically. just run a good bead of it around all the holes and connect it from hole to hole.
yea 90wt is good, if you have the LSD make sure it comes with the limited slip additive or you can buy it separate.
and as far as how high to fill it, just fill it to the bottom of the fill hole and ur good.

 

Personnally I use Valvoline 75W90... I don't tow with mine much..
But use 75W140 if your towing on a frequent basis.. Use Permatex "The Gasket Maker" its a black silicone its great for stuff like that..

one word of advice - gear oil stinks to high heaven. don't get any on your clothes. don't wipe your hands on your pants. don't put the dirty towels or rags anywhere near the wife's kitchen trash. put them in a sack and leave them outside...

90 weight is fine for non-towing applications. I have always used RTV and that's how it comes from the factory. As far as how high to fill it, I've always filled a diff until I could feel the fluid on the end of my pinky with it inserted in the fill hole to the end most joint. That's prolly somewhere close to that 5/8" mark I guess.

I like the Valvoline synthetic fluids, myself. I've used them for years, I've also used Royal Purple and Lucas oils and have never had a diff problem, ever. Stick with a name-brand full synthetic and you'll be fine...
