oil pressure seems fine, temps are fine, no coolant in oil, and it only smokes until i get about 2-3 blocks from the house after startup. after that it doesnt smoke at all. looks white, possibly blue-ish but more white from what ive noticed. its quite obvious that it is smoking, and it sometimes backfires and just generally runs like **** until its warm, but only smokes for the first minute or 2 of running

sounds like water vapor.. condensation due to hot exhaust/cooler air.. crap condenses inside your pipes, your cat, and your muffler.. and sometimes drips out tailpipe or burns white (steam) putting the freak on us..

go smell it..

lmao
That doesn't sound right.

If it runs like crap until warm it could be that you have a cracked distributor cap, allowing water vapor in and causing a hard starting condition. Also....wait....here it comes....check your plenum.

and that is what I get for not paying attention....

I once had a cracked cap on a '85 LA360.. it would run like crap, hard to start.. but no smoke.. once the condensation in the cap burned off it was good.. took me forever to figure out what it was..

that's a pretty good call DodgeDude...

white smoke = coolant , black smoke = unburned fuel, blue smoke = oil.... with that said i would agree with the rest on the cracked cap. my truck looks like it smokes when i first start it but all it is is water in the exhaust from sitting so often here latley. gas in the bike is cheaper lol

yes the bike is cheaper, and better looking! about the cracked cap, i have replaced that maybe 4000 miles ago along with wires, plugs, coil, rotor, and a few other things. it once backfired so hard that it blew my muffler open like a clam shell. luckily the exhaust shop replaced it for me but id really like to figure this out!

If it was just the smoking I'd say its common form the valve seals going bad on vehicles that sit or have sat for extended periods of time without running....although it usually only smokes for the first minute or so. I have this same problem on my vette and have been told its from sitting over winters not being ran by multiple people.
But I'm not so sure if the backfiring is related ?
