Before I adjust my TV cable

I recently purchased a 1994 Ram with approx 15000 miles on a rebuilt tranny, which I assume to be a 46rh. I was driving the other day and had to "floor it" and swerve to miss an idiot on a motorcycle. All of a sudden my tranny wont shift out of 1st. I have reverse and 1st only.
The other day I drove it and got it to 4000 rpm and it shifted to second and through rest of the gears fine. Now it wont do it again.
Just wanted to know if I could mess anything up if I get the TV cable too far out of adjustment. I know my way around an engine ok, but have no experience in transmissions.
Thanks for any input.

I probably shouldnt post this.... Try at your own risk.
When im having mechanical governor problems and they are mounted on the tailshaft. While going down the road over 55 or 60 mph, stab the shifter into park a few times quickly. The parking pawl wont be able to engage with the output shaft spinning that fast, but will rattle against it, potentially freeing up any stuck governor valves.

Is that the trans technician equivalent of the Italian tuneup?
