Default 6qts in a trans fluid change?

Hey guys so a couple of days ago I adjusted the bands in the tranny and changed the oil and filter. The manual says like 3.8qts required for a service fill so I bought 4qts and put about 3 3/4s in. I thought it was full but checked it today and it wasn't even on the dipstick! I had a buzzing coming from the transmission too... So I added two more quarts very carefully, 1/2qt at a time, allowing the fluid in the tube to settle between checking it.

So at the end of 6qts total its almost at the minimum hole... I want to drive it for a bit and double check that I need more, I really dont want to overfill it if I haven't already!

but 6qts after a fluid change? Is that normal? It wasn't a flush, I checked for leaks, no transmission fluid leaks, warmed the truck up, paused in every gear, ect...

Any insight is welcome...

didja know that rascal holds like 16qts total? Sounds like you got more out of it than somebody who just dropped the pan and slapped it back on quick like before more than 5qts came out of it.. No worries- but watch it none the less.. better to err on the side of caution.

I just did mine today and was wondering the same thing lol. I drove it around for about 45 minutes so it was good and hot though. Ended up taking almost 7 qts to get to the full mark. I bought 10 qts because I plan on changing it again in a week or two so it's a good thing I had extra! I'll check it again in a day or 2 after I drive to work.

I had to add about 12 quarts when i did mine. here is why:

1. Driveway at the old place was at a slight incline, so more fluid was able to drain from radiator.
2. I tried to drill a drain plug, and put it on the wrong side and could not put it back on. I had to wait 4 DAYS for a new tranny pan to come in the mail. Lot of time to drain!
3. The new tranny pan was a deep pan that held an extra 2.5 quarts.

It happens.

Mine took 8 quarts the last time I changed the fluid because I drained the pan then slapped it back on dry and let it sit overnight.
I think it took about 6 quarts the time before that.

when i did mine, i had mine off for about a half hour and it took about 5 quarts....thats about 5K ago, and when i checked my fluid monday, its still right at the full line..

and an FYI....when you change the fluid its good to bring the shifter to 1, wait 10 seconds, go to 2, wait 10 seconds, 3 wait ten seconds, all the way up so fluid gets in all the nooks and crannies...then check fluid level, tak for ride, and check again...

and you DID check while running in NEUTRAL right? park will not give an accurate reading.

+1 these guys know what there talking about. Don't trust the haynes manual if that's what your going off of. And only use Mopar atf +4, Also only check your fluid in Neutral and not in park.
