so I tried to test to see if I have spark coming off the coil but I am not sure I did it correctly. what should I do before I go any further as I am sure if its not getting spark from the coil it won't work anywhere else in the chain of things.

Pull the coil wire off the dizzy and stick a screwdriver in the end and set it next to something metal. I always use the exhaust manifolds. Then just try to start it and see if it sparks.

ok so put a new crank shaft sensor on and still no spark. It is my understanding that even with a bad cam sensor it will still start just run really rough can anyone set me straight on that. I don't know what else to check other then just taking it to a shop.

I am new to testing stuff with the meter so if anyone could give me a walkthrough on testing the sensors that would be great or tell me detailed instructions on testing for spark or what not.

If the cam sensor has failed completely, and the PCM isn't getting a signal from it, that will trigger the ASD relay. So, if you are getting spark while cranking, it 'should' be ok..... need to find out what you are missing. Need spark, and fuel. Air shouldn't be an issue..... I would hope.

pretty sure its getting fuel as the pump primes every time. I hooked a spark tester up to the wires for plugs and got no spark. then I hooked it up to the coil where the plug hooks to and still no spark there.

My 97 is doing the same. Put on a new coil and coil wire. Still would not start. Had it towed home, got it off the wrecker, and it started right up.

Bad crank sensor, or PCM. crank sensor is cheaper. Sorta. Get one from the dealer.
