After some snooping and considering your highway speeds, if you're running the 245's I'd go with the 4.10. That should put you around 2450 at 55 with od off.

The rear end is going to be built to handle it when the 4.10s are installed (will have new bearings and such put in), if I'm not able to trade up to another truck. I think they are 265 70 17s. I will double check later when I get home.

I have a 98 2500 with 3.55 gears in a Dana 60. and I have a stock tranny (new, installed by previous owner). My problem isn't the weight I'm pulling due to brakes/suspension etc...It's that the 5.9 gasser is a pig..

My brakes/suspension hold/stop trailer just fine, I'm just looking for that little extra power for climbing the small hills.

Then gears will be your friend. For the stock tire size, 4.10's should be good.

Go to trailerlife mag to get the proper towing cap info for your truck.

I guess I should say that this is for Canada and yes they check out your rig for towing cap up here. Way to many people tow with the wrong truck/car. As I live in the mountains I have seen my shear of and 5ths/TT that have crashed head on into the rock cut becouse of the wrong truck or lack of driving exp with a big trailer.

NOTE: Sports models are not recommended for towing.
Dodge rates its cars based on towing trailers on fairly level
roads in moderate weather conditions. Trailer ratings more
than 10,000 pounds are for fifth-wheels.
*TD = turbodiesel.
a Requires 3.9:1 axle ratio.
b Requires four-speed automatic overdrive transmission.
c Requires three-speed automatic transmission.
d Requires 3.5/3.9:1 axle ratio.
e Requires 4.09/4.10:1 axle ratio.

f Requires either a 3.5/3.9/4.09/4.10:1 axle ratio.
g With five-speed manual transmission.
h Towing not recommended with 3.21:1 axle ratio.
i California gcwr may differ.
NOTE: Vehicles with tow ratings that are
below 2,000 pounds are not included.
j Requires towing package.
k Club Cab rating slightly lower.
L Requires 3.21:1 axle ratio.
m Requires manual 5/6-spd transmission.
n 4WD not listed by factory at presstime.

Ummmm, why can't a sport model tow? It's the exact same motor, trans, suspension etc.. The only differences are trim and bumpers and headlights. Why would that make it not recommended for towing?

I am referring to our 1/2 ton axles being semi floaters. Yours going to put alot of strain in those bearings. But you said this isn't gonna be an everyday thing so you should be ok.

Thats just some universal bullsh^t, sport models have the same tow ratings as the regular trucks and just look better doing it.

This is a once a year deal. The rest of the year the camper sits at home, with the occasional 8 mile trip to the campground north of town for a weekend maybe 2 times a year max.

I pulled the old camper with a 4.7 02 qcsb ram, only upgrade was airbags in the back. It did great, no problems at all. We'd take it to the beach maybe twice a year, averaged 11 mpgs, normally it was 17 mpgs. I thought she did well, and the old trailer was right at the rams capacity.
