Default tranny gurus help

98 178xxx miles tranny rebuilt at 172xxxish

recently i lost tcc lock up, and i know its the tcc because i have a slight drop in rpms as i hit 4th gear. is there any way to tell if the problem is the torque converter it self or the lock up soleniod. i had tcc lock up one day and the next i didnt. i dont have any broken, clipped, torn or otherwise messed up wires. i dont have money to replace both right now but i need to fix this problem asap, because gas is killing me i have to run 26k rpms or more just to do the sppedlimit drivin back and forth to work

If you are turnin' those kind of revs, you don't have fourth gear either.

Take the truck out someplace where you can hit 55mph, and there isn't much traffic. Start out from a dead stop, and accelerate at part throttle. Count the shifts. See how many you get. (I am going to guess, only two....)

I wonder if you are getting TCC, but not fourth gear..... Might be as simple as replacing the solenoid pair for TCC, and Overdrive.

Everything ive been reading into says to do that, but it requires pulling the valve body, and im not gonna lie. Turning a wrench on my tranny scares me a little, how hard is it to pull the valvebody and change the soleniod set?

There are a couple trans overhaul walkthrus linked in the FAQ section here. Check out J415's transmission thread, and just read over the parts about the valve body. If you have changed the fluid/filter in a trans before, you are already most of the way there. You need to pay attention to which bolts go where though, as it DOES matter. (I think there are pics in some of the walk thrus that point out where the odd ones go)

The real trick is, keep everything CLEAN, and don't lose the little ***** in the valve body, and be careful when you drop it, as other stuff comes with it. (couple pistons that should be obvious when you look up there, before the tranny fluid drips in your eye. )

You can do this.

A drop that small is converter lockup, not overdrive. Overdrive engagement lowers engine RPM by 31% as the drive ratio goes from 1.00:1 to 0.69:1.
