Default Painting Running Boards Help

I have been wanting to paint my stainless steel running boards black for some time now but just havent got around to it because i dont want them looking like s**t. I was just wondering if you guys had any tips on a project like this (prep work, what paint to use, cautions, techniques)? What type of paint could be used on this that will not chip or wear easily (brand and type please)? What type of prep work should be done on the running boards (such as cleaning, priming or sanding)? Just so we're on the same page, i believe they are technically called nerf bars but im not sure. Anyway, your input is appreciated. Thanks

Stainless?? Hhhmmm..... would you consider Rhino Liner, or something similar? You would probably have more success with that, than paint. It will wear better, and be more durable, if applied according to the directions. (basically, a VERY clean surface to apply it to.....)

Thats a good idea, but i kinda wanted to give it a smooth look. And Rhino liner could be a bit pricey :/

Stainless is hard to paint. Even if you sand the sh*t out of it. It can be done but won't last long.

Not sure if it will work, but I'd say your best bet is to hit it with some acid/self-etching primer then paint it like any other part and really lay on a lot of clearcoat.

Metal conditioner. Its basically phosphoric acid..... it will clean EVERYTHING off...... any paint supply company will have it.

Trouble is, the smooth finish is, well... smooth.... and is going to be pretty much frictionless when wet. Not exactly what you would want for a step I would think.

well the plastic texturied part of the step is where you actually step so if the rest is smooth it doesn't matter...it's already smooth stock. Thx for the tips tho

ya that wouldt look bad but I have a feeling that bed liner paint would chip and come off easily since it will be stepped on everyday
