Question Rear Brake Problems

I adjust them to where they hold but then they drag. And when I back them off just so they don't drag they don't hold.

I put new drums and shoes on both sides.

I need to get this fixed soon because I'm taking a 466 JD engine to Bedford PA over the 4th.I really don't wanna drive 8 hrs with my brakes like this.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

just make sure your auto adjusters work good and let them tighten them self. a little bit of drag is normal.

how much drag are we talking about. a whole lot or just a tick tick tick. a little drag tick is normal.

i adjust them by tightening them up where the wheel won't turn, and then backing it off to where it turns freely, even if its still got a tick.

it drags enough that they get hot and it pulls the engine down

Back them off a notch or two. You should be able to hear the friction material in contact with the drum, but, not to the point where they get difficult to turn. Are your drums out of round?

They shouldn't be since I just put brand new ones on it

Just because they are new, does not necessarily imply they aren't out of round. I turn even the new ones, as a matter of course. I don't like come-backs.

Valid point. Didn't even think of this one.

Make sure you install the shoe with the SMALL pad area on the front side of the drum.

through what method are you engaging the brakes when they don't hold? brake peddle or parking brake?
