Default Max towing capacity 1998 2500 quad cab w/factory tow package?

I've got a 98 short bed quad cab 2500 w/the factory tow package. The door sticker says 8800lb GVWR. We're looking to buy a fifth wheel camper. Does that mean the max weight of the camper can be 8800#.

Thanks for any info.

There should be a GCWR somewhere.... (Gross Combined Weight Rating, or some such)

I think there is also a thread in the faq section that details the various combinations, and towing capacity.

It's in your owner's manual, but if you don't have one, you would be looking at a reccomended combined gross weight of 14,000 with 4:10 gears. So your truck should be in the neighborhood of 6,ooo lbs which leaves the trailer 8,000 lbs minus all your stuff. If it is a gas 5.9, your not going to be very happy towing much more,if any more than that.

Those figures are for gas. Diesel, obviously, different story.

http://dodgeram.info/2001/towing-charts.html

Use that chart.

Next time you need to give us more information.. what engine do you have and so forth... short bed or long. If its a 5.9 gas engine you can tow up to 8600 pounds.. However a combined GVW should not be more then 14,000 lbs. This means adding up the weight of your vehicle, combined with any cargo or people you have inside, and then adding the trailer.

If your truck is a 4x4 then the towing weight its no more then 8,100 lbs

Does anyone know why the 4x4 models show a lower payload rating?

because it goes by gross weight, and a solid axle and transfercase add weight to the vehicle, so sitting fully loaded, the trucks would weight the same.

Yea like the guy above said. I dont know what kind of transfercases dodges use but for a Jeep they weigh up to 100lbs. The add'd axle, drive shaft and differential would probably weigh another 300-400lbs. So there is the 500 lbs

So, realistically, the payload capability is the same, Dodge just doesn't want you to go over GVWR?

A easier to read version of the towing chart is here in the FAQ, as HeyYou pointed out.

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...w-ratings.html

So, depending on what engine you have...
  • · 4x4 Club Cab/Quad Cab 5.9L V8: 8150 lbs
  • · 4x4 Club Cab/Quad Cab V10: 12700 lbs
  • · 4x4 Club Cab/Quad Cab Diesel: 13400 lb
