I was told to remove both + and - terminals then touch them together for a second or two.

 

Don't listen to that person again.

 

Remove the neg and turn the lights on for about 30 seconds. That will drain the reserve faster.

 

Slap that person across the face next time you see them...good way to fry something right there.

disconnect negative only, turn key to start and hold it there for 10-15 seconds, or turn on the headlights for a minute.

 

Yup, NEVER touch the two together.
