Default Sad day for my Ram...

So I was leaving work yesterday when i came to a stoplight about to turn right. I hit the gas to go around and a nice loud bang/snap came from my rear end followed by a loud grinding noise. I concluded that something in my rear end had snapped or blown. I plan on taking off the diff cover tomorrow and taking a look inside and diagnosing it fully. But a mechanic friend of mine and I are pretty sure its either the pinion or the axle shaft. So either way, I'll be ordering my 4.56's this week!

The money was supposed to be going towards a replacement motor, but I kinda need a effective mode of transportation... so yeah. Any advice would be nice regarding experience with 4.56's and 35's, like mileage and performance gains. I have a few very experienced mechanic friends who will be helping me with the gears, so no shop costs! Thanks guys!

Thats a bummer dude. It will feel like a new truck with 4.56's front and back. You gonna lock it or LSD it? Snap a few pics on what you find.

I barely have the money right now for the gears, so I won't be locking it as of now. But I do plan on getting a locker or LSD in the future.

And yeah, I think 35's with stock 3.55's didn't help with the situation either haha.

Well contrary to my previous comment, I ordered a Lock Right locker for my truck. It turns out that I destroyed my spider gears, so I found out that this would fix it. So I still may order gears soon, but not right away. I made the logical decision and got my truck at least driving for now.

Can do, I'm starting to get excited about it. I have a lot of jealous friends now too!

How much that locker run you?

I have a detroit truetrac, and it deletes the carrier and spiders too, not as nasty for a street queen as a locker.

It was right around $450 for the locker, then I bought all synthetic oil for the rear diff, so it all cost me $540 through Oreilly's. I have a friend who works there and he shaved a few bucks off for me. It should come in Friday morning and I can probably have it in Friday night if everything goes as planned.

You aren't going to like the Lock-Right when accelerating out of a turn, and neither will your tires. But in off-road situations, they're tons better than an open diff!

Before you install the Lock-Right in your stock carrier, make SURE to check the entire carrier carefully for any cracks. Carriers can stretch or crack as a result from broken side gears and/or spider gears. Just the luck of the draw on how it broke I guess.

A new internal gear kit (new spiders + side gears + pin + washers) runs ~$160 on Randy's ring and pinion and even cheaper on flee-bay (~$120ish w/shipping). Both of these would also have fixed your problem on a tight budget (but your truck would be back to being a "one wheel peel").

Good luck with the Lock-Right, and be sure to get us a full review when you have a chance!
