Default Transfer case snap ring broke

Hello, so I recently discovered the rear snap ring on my transfer case broke, 97 1500, with np231, and have ordered the transfer case saver, but it will be 2 weeks before it gets to me in Canada. So until then I ordered the regular snap ring from Dodge, and even that wont be here till monday afternoon.

So my question is, what are the chances there is much internal damage done to the TC? once the grinding noise started, i only drove for appr. 50 km before I pulled the tailsection and found it broke, and the grinding wasnt constant, more randomly every couple of minutes.

Thanks, Craig.

Put the snap ring in, and see what it sounds like.... Not much else you can do at this point. Unless you want to pull it, and disassemble it for inspection.

You should be ok, like heyyou said just put the snap ring in and see what it sounds like. The grinding was just the gear train moving back and forth.

Mine broke twice, never any grinding noise, just a random clunking from it going into and out of 4wd. It's still fine. Of course I have a live front axle, so my front driveshaft is turning when 4wd engages, on your truck it's engaging while the driveshaft isn't moving, so there's more damage going on.

Got a new snap ring from a tranny shop, and the noise is gone. Hopefully it stays away, and thanks for your help!

Ya I ordered one as soon as I found the problem, but being in Canada, its gonna take 6-10 days to reach me, and I need my truck moving now lol. Thank you though.
