You still would have to have the mileage programmed. Either way, it's really not that big of a deal. Another option would be to install an aftermarket tach, and get the mounting pod that goes on top of the steering column.

 

If all you want is a tach then I would just get an aftermarket one like zman suggested. They are really easy to install you can even get a little one to put on the pillar post. Actually you could get a little tach, trans temp and vacuum gauge on the piller to keep an eye on other important info as well
