Default Front axle seals

I need to change the u-joints and seals in my front axle, and I have a couple of questions.

How difficult is it?

Are there any special tools to make the job easier, other than the usual 1/2 drive, and common tools?

Do I need to put friction modifier in the front end, or is that only for the rear?

Thanks

Tom

Thanks, I've got the shop manual, but of course it calls for tools I don't have. The pavement sucks and quad 4x4 links were very helpful!

How much of a PITA is it to do? I called the stealership, they want $1200. I can do it myself, would just like to know what kind nightmare I'm getting into.

I've rebuilt motors and trannys before, but never had to mess with axles.

It's not too awful, just take your time. When you remove the right outer axle, don't lose the plastic bushing that's in the end of it. That bushing is where the outer and inner axles connect.

IF the big 1-11/16 axle nut comes off.
IF the bearing comes out of the knuckle ok.
IF the front diff comes out of the case ok.
IF you have a tool for pulling the seals into the axle housing....

then its not too bad.

IF any of the above don't come apart like they should, you won't even get to the stupid little $10 seals.

i thought it was a lot of work.
its worth doing, but it might take longer than you expect, and you might need another vehicle to drive back and forth to the parts store.

get good seals - SKF/napa or National/Advance.
get good u-joints - Precision or Spicer.
