a very simple question
Hey guys,
Alright I know this is going to be an extremely silly question but I need to ask just for peace of mind.
I am living in the UK and have a 96 Ram 5.9 the truck has come from california in 2007 where it had had some major mods, including alot of internal engine mods, unfortunately I have no idea what these mods have entailed.
I have not had the truck long and am looking to service it, off the top of my head I think the manual said 10w30 oil is the right stuff to use. I know that the climate here in England is a little different to that in California and would like to know if 10w30 is still the right oil? (or maybe internal mods would mean a different grade oil is needed).
Unfortunately I am quickly learning that mechanics in this country dont have a clue about american engines (probably cus they're used to looking at low capacity 4 cylinders).
I may be just being daft but its always best to be safe than sorry.
Cheers

Thanks for the quick reply.
Just rang an 'american car specialist' he said 10w40, but then he also told me that I dont need a pcv valve so I'm not sure I should be taking his advice.

You need the PCV valve....... find a different mechanic.
10w30, 10w40 doesn't really matter much. Your climate probably isn't quite as dramatic as mine here..... I run 30 all year round. Works just fine.

Yea, I was thinkin the same thing, its a funny one though, as I have tried to speak to a few local mechanics about the PCV valve (including a good friend of mine) and no one has even heard of one, must be an american motor thing. I have one on order anyway so I will fit it myself hopefully (its currently got 2 crankcase filters fitted).
As for the oil, I appreciate your help, I'm not sure what I'll go for, it'll probably be the 30 though. Final question.... does it matter if its fully or part synthetic?

It's a way for gases to be released from the crankcase. There are other ways of doing this that your engines might use.

I change my oil fairly regularly, so, don't feel that the price of synthetics is worth it. I just run regular dino oil.

Go completely synthetic (change about every 6k miles, or about 9600 km) or completely dino oil (change about every 3k miles, or 4800 km). The mixed "partial" synthetics/dino combination oils give no real benefit over dino oil.
