So just put in a clutch and steel and thats it? Also if I take the tailshaft off the od unit is rite there? Do I need any special tools. Ive read about a massive spring. Could I just take the od unit to a trans shop and have it rebuilt?

Getting the OD section off is a pain in itself. I say do it yourself but I have been a tech for 10 years. When its off you want to replace the overdrive piston retainer seals. The fibers and steels and to get the snap ring into place its very tricky. You need to compress the direct clutch hub with 850 lbs. of pressure. I jacked up my truck and used the weight of the frame rail as my press. Worked great but had to do it 3 times because its hard to line up the planetary gears inside with the special tool which acts like a dummy intermediate shaft. You know what after thinking about it call a trans. shop and ask them how much. One of those things where you do it everyday its cake but the first time sucks. I mean if you gave me the pieces i could put it all together in 10 minutes. I say take the OD unit off and take it to a shop.

Thank you very much for your answer. That is the kind of answer I was looking for instead of people saying to just take it somewhere.
I know what your saying tho. Ive rebuilt the 727 trans that is in my 69 d100 and it came out perfect. But this 46re may be a bit to different. I had a great 727 handbook to go off of, but I cant find one for the 46re. Ill get it off and make my decision. Ill deff call the trans shop for an estimate tho.

Look in the faq section for a transmission thread by J415. in it, you will find links to walkthrus of the process, complete with pics and such. If you have the capability to compress that spring, the rest should be cake.

check with PATC to see about all the upgrades for the OD and Direct drive clutch, along with seals and such for a complete rebuild. They'll have the paperwork for the clearances and such, and you can buy manuals also I believe. I think they also sell tooling unless you decide to go to a shop to have it done.

My gears started slipping after I changed the rear end out, then I only had 1st, 2nd and drive, no OD. now my 1998 2 wd automatic dodge ram pick up has only had 1st gear for about 2 weeks, so I dropped the transmission pan and the OD direct clutch wave snap ring was stuck on a magnet in the pan. Any suggestions on what to do next?
