What i ended up doin, since it was only a 1 time thing, i had another junk actuator layin around so i made it so the fork on the bad actuator was locked in the 4x4 position and secured it with a huge zip tie in the gap between the house and fork so it couldent slide into the 2wd position. So then all i had to do is take the actuator that was on already off, put the collor over both axle shaft since it slides over by hand and then put the fabed actuator on and put some fluid in it. I drove around in 4x4 all day with no problems at all. Im ordering the posi lock in the next week or two but this worked for what i had to do.

Default front axle noise

OK l have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. I replaced the front axle u-joints yesterday. now l have a noise @ around 25mph. Its sounds like the axle locking gear is slipping/jumping. it only does this when under power,. I didnt relpace the hub/bearing assembly cause they are ok. Truck only has 120k on it. All the drive shafts have new brute force u-joints that are less then 6 months old. I had to change out axle joints cause they where bad. Question is this. Could the actuator be failing ( not keeping the lock collar fully engaged or could the stub shaft be slipping in the hub? There is no vibration, just the gear popping sound.

Did you pull the CAD housing off to do the passenger side axle? If not, likely something in there isn't aligned properly. Also, I think there is a bushing between the inner, and outer axle shafts..... if it isn't there, you will have alignment issues with the axles.

Yep. Careful though, the bolts like to break....... Hit 'em with chems first, and let them soak for a bit. Open it up, have a look, see what ya got.

Well l " opened her up " and axles are not in alignment. But good news is this, it's a easy fix. The bearing was in place. What isnt in place it the centering pin. The inner axle has a male pin and the outter has the hole. So in short, the male centering pin didnt get in the hole. I am going to my friends garage tomorrow and we gonna loosen up the axle, pull the actuator and get the pin in the hole. that should solve the issue. l attached a picture to show you what l am babbling about. Thank you so much for your time in helping me out with this.Love this site, Its great place. Also, it already had new seals installed also and theyre not leaking. Some one was in it before, so it came apart real easy.

Here is a pic of my baby. 2001 1500 4x4. Auto, 5in suspension lift. 305/70R16's mud/snow.355 gears. 5.9. 120257 miles on it. I take better care of my truck then my family. ( Just kidding ) l also found a " old school " KC roll bar with working KC lights. I have 20,000 lumens worth of led lights in the bumper and once l install the roll bar, l and adding another 80,000 lumens. I'll be able to see through walls. LOL

To see if you have a bad vaccum pump on the actuator, slide the collar back and forth. If it creates a suction, then the diaphragm is good. if not, then that's bad. I bought a 98 Cummins and front axle didn't engage. Pulled the CAD and apparently, someone hit something, bent the diaphragm causing it to loose suction under vaccum. I ended up having a junk dana 44 with a good actuator, but I somehow broke the mounting hole on the housing. so I took both apart and made one good one out of two....
