MSD ignition
Well for starters I drive an 2001 1500 4x4 with a freshly rebuilt 5.9L .060 over and a even fresher rebuilt 46re...it's bone stock minus offroad y pipe and Hughes plenum fix... Now the question... my buddy has a brand new msd 6 al ignition box msd coil msd 8.5 wires and msd cap and rotor that he is willing to just about give me...seeing as my truck is stock would this set up be worth the time to even hook-up and if it is what do I need to do the job
Better boom per powerstroke via better ignition of a/f mix... More likely to burn ALL of the mix.. and all of it touching off at TDC or a floggin fraction of a moment afterward... Means better use of fuel and more efficient use of powerstroke, which means a little more power in torque, which is the father of horsepower..
You go through plugs more often tho, as you're firing them with more energy and a few times as opposed to once per powerstroke..
It's worth it..

I have a MSD, I did not notice any difference. I have the 6AL box and I gap .045. Over that and it gets bad. If you go .06 then as the copper erodes, it will run like crap.
And you go through not just spark plugs 3x as fast (3 sparks per rev), you go through caps, rotors and wires 3x as fast. I have to do a tuneup every year. and I only drive my truck about 5-8K per year. The cap and rotor always look bad even after 5K miles.
The only reason it is on my truck is because i had it from 2001 and it was in my IROC. So i was bored and put it on my truck.
If you are paying more than 150 bucks for the set, it is not worth it. It will not do anything. The MSD boxes in race cars are not like the MSD boxes like the 6AL (the 2-300 dollar boxes).
OH, and don't gap your plugs unless you get a better coil. That is where you can benefit from plug gapping.

However, for ease of installation, mount it on your PDC cover with double sided tape. The tape acts as a shock absorber. and there is a power source right in the PDC box you can hook the MSD to.
ALso, this is important:
Put quick connects on the ignition wires coming off the coil. That way, if the box fails, you can switch it back in about 30 seconds rather than having to cut and splice back. And when you go in for inspection you can take it out in 5 mins.
Ok I just want to show you guys something.
Some people say that msd boxes do nothing and some say they work. I went on vacation in July of this year On the way down we pasted Dennis Andersons house and on the way back we stoped. I was looking at one of his monster trucks and guess what I found in it on the pass side floor board. A msd 6al box.
