Default Belt, rear end, transfer case, the list goes on...

ok so 3 days ago my harmonic balancer that i put in just 3 months ago broke, the balancer came off the rubber sleeve...(autozone, go figure) well i warenteed it out...got the new one on, and now my belt wont stop squeeking....its like my idler pulley is eating it....i found black over the pulley, and it looked to be greese or something....cleaned that all up, put belt back on the black was forming again...its like the pulley is eating it, but the pulley is mint, no pits or anything, what could cause this, and thats what its from. I took off belt and started it and no sound, no its not a "not tight harmonic balancer" cuz i know its tight and lined up.

Also when im driving i get this whistling type sound, like the driveshaft is spinning dry, as soon as i let off the gas, regardless of speed the sound stops....are the the rear u-joints? i took driveshaft out and theres no play/binding in the u-joints.

Also when i go in reverse im hearing a type of grinding noise...its quick sound, and does it a couple of times if in reverse all the way down my driveway (about 25-30 yards)...tranny fluid is new has 3K on it, level was perfect and didnt smell burt....rear diff fluid was just changed, and i just put a 1/2 quart of fluid in my t-case today.....what would that sound be...its like gears meshing real quick (the sound i mean)...runs beautiful, no stumbles, but has a small vibration on take off.

sorry for the novel, but i need some help, truck keeps giving me problems, and i need them fixed.

When you had the shaft off, did you happen to check the snap ring on the output shaft of the t-case?

Is the idler pulley binding when you have belt tension on it? (that's what it sounds like.....) Or possible, the pulley right before the idler in the rotation is binding, and heating the belt, and it just leaves crap on the idler......

yes its likes it heating up on the pulley and melting on it....the pulley spins free just fine, doesnt have any type of bind that i can tell....

ill check the snp ring tomorrow, but the t-case works perfect...4x4 goes right in, and comes right out without any grinding...and thats 4hi and 4lo...no grinding, or hesitation, it locks right in, disengages right away....i just replaced the t-case last november....but if the snap ring came off, could that be the sound i hear in reverse? the ring catching on something? it doesnt do it all the time.

Snap ring can create all manner of odd noises. Check it, just to be sure. If that's ok, see if you can put the truck up on jackstands, and duplicate the noise, and see if you can find where it's coming from.

the "whistling" sound, (when going forward) sounds like the front driveshaft is spinning real fast almost...i can hear it out my window and it sounds like its right below me...could that be a loose chain in the t-case?

Chain shouldn't be moving in 2wd......

My trans makes a bit of a whine in first gear, (just normal gear whine....) which goes away as soon as it shifts... is that what you are hearing maybe??

my shaft IS spinning in 2wd, and has since i put this t-case in....varified this by pulling my shift boot, driving, and my fiancee saw it moving, but it did with the old t-case too....but it doesnt spin in tune with the rear shaft, what i mean is that the front shaft will slow down/speed up, even if im at a even 45 mph...so its no in sync with the rear, just spins right around...and when parked i can spin the front shaft freely so its not locked in 4x4

Maybe what your hearing is the front driveshaft but why is it spinning is the question

maybe the spinning "motivation" isn't coming from the t-case, maybe the spider gears in the front diff are offering up enough resistance to turn the ring and pinion there by turning the front drive shaft, makes more sense to me. my money is on the front cross pin.
