Default Transfer Case leaking

Hello!

Just bought a 1997 years Ram 1500 Magnum and now it has been starting to leak in the transfer case, see the red ring.. (Not my pic, my transfer case is still on the car)

  • How do I do to take the whole case down and fix the leak?
  • Can I fix it without take the whole case down?
  • Where can I find a Exploded view on this part?

Cheers from Sweden

I would try to fix the tailshaft leak while on the truck.
Try http://www.drivetrain.com/ for the parts blow up photo.

Ok thanks.
Is it just to pull rear shaft away, take the tailshaft down and then replace the seal and remount?
Nothing more difficult than that?

Take the tailshaft housing off first. (the bolts a layer above the ones you are looking at there in green.) Have a look at the snap ring that is supposed to retain the shaft in place, should be right up against the bearing. I don't know if you have to pull that snap ring to get the next layer off there...... Have a look, see what ya think.

If the leak is within the red ring its not a rear seal there is a gasket under that tail piece that attaches to the main case.
