unless GPS's have improved?

in '93 I used a mil spec GPS that was accurate to a 12 digit grid coordinate.. that is 12 digits.. that is a ten centimeters squared. It was teh size of a phone book, which exceeded 10 centimeters squared.. I was about to toss it out the window as I watched the coordinates fluctuating, but then plugged in an external antenna.. the internal was too insulated.. an external gave a specific pin point.. problem solved.

if you're to attest that GPS's aren't accurate, you're not familiar with quality products.. as short as five years ago, you had to pay $500+ for a decent GPS.. now you can get that same GPS for <$100.. as far as gauging speed of a vehicle, GPS is the most accurate means to do so..

thousands of miles? do you think the GPS is talking to the satellites? that creates a humorous image: My GPS speaks in Homer Simpson's voice.. so it would be something like this-

GPS!
yes, Homer
Beer...
Yes, Homer- go 1 mile north on route 264, make a left on to Henderson and a quick mart is on the right.
Oooh- Beer...

your GPS is calibrated to discern frequencies of satellites.. it triangulates your position based off of the originating location of the birds.. the more birds it listens for, the more accurate your fix..

your speedo, your GPS, or any other method of gauging speed is trumped by the cops radar gun.. or even their vascar, if you wanna split hairs.. simply said: if a cop testifies you were speeding, in the courts eyes- you were.. it's highly unlikely your going to beat that. I've heard of it done, but that was based off of the calibration of the radar gun- and it's been a while since radar guns have required calibration...

but, all of this is neither here nor there.. what is: if you wanna know how fast you're going, a GPS is the most accurate way to gauge there is internal to the vehicle..

You are right, as long as you are maintaining speed on a flat road with a clear view of the sky.

BTW Radar guns still require calibration.

When I was in the service..... the county cops like to park just off base, and set up their speed traps to catch the military personnel as they were coming on to base. After they had busted a couple of our B-52 pilots...... they ALL took to looking to see if anyone was there when they were on approach to land. If they saw a cop, they would hit 'em with their targeting radar for the tail gun, and SMOKE the police radar.

It was really funny to watch the cops pull out and leave, very shortly after a buff landed...... we all knew exactly what had just happened.

I also just wanna say, people that rely on a GPS for everything or even just driving annoy the crap outta me. I have been almost hit multiple time by people staring at he GPS unit instead of watching where the hell they are going. They are just as bad a cellphone users IMHO.

that reminds me of a local story here is washington a month or so ago where 3 women drove down a boat launch and into the water because their gps directed them to. http://bellevue.komonews.com/news/91...-slough/647201

recalculating.....

on a side note about gps from another site "As a result of a new proposal to use radio bandwidth right next to the existing GPS service, the future reliability of the GPS system across the United States is now in question. We encourage you to contact the FCC during a short 30-day public comment period, to help them understand the public’s need for continued, reliable GPS signals for safe navigation on boats, in cars, and for so many other daily uses" http://www.saveourgps.org/

So soon many gps devices may no longer be operational, should make things out there interesting

i have a garmin nuvi 5000(made for big rigs and rvs) with an external antenna mounted on top of my roof and my gps is so accurate that while im creeping down trails it will say im going 0.03 mph. damn!

also the screen is like 5'' wide so even the cop behind me can clearly read what speed im going!

also by the end of a tank of gas my stock odo will say 260 miles while the correct and accurate gps will read 300 miles.

I just took my truck in to the dealership to have the speedometer corrected and they charged me $52.00.

Do you have a cell phone? What type? My droid X can do the speed, and its faster and more accurate than my Tom Tom.

Also I really don't think he got pulled over for doing 60 in a 55. Speedometers vary form car to car and can be as much as 5-10 MPH off either high or low. That is why 99.9% of cops will not pull you over for doing 5 or so over. Really the only time you will stopped for 5 over is in School zones. What I am getting at here is cops know people don't adjust speedos for big tires and are usually a little more giving. The OP was probably being rude and arguing with the cop and the cop defused it by say what he did.

Unlike most people I am not embarrassed to tell you about my tickets, two weeks ago I got pulled over for doing 57 in a 35 in my truck, I did not see the sign and was used to driving in California. In January I was pulled over for doing 65 in a 50, and prolly would not have been pulled over if I was not passing a Porche Carrera in a min-van.
That's total BS about speedometers being off by 5-10mph. It's a myth that's been around since the 1950's that just won't die. Go through any construction zone that has the radar set up to warn of drivers' speed beforehand and match it to the speedometer. Unless the tire size has been altered the speed will more often than not be dead-on ***** accurate.

The same goes for "why police don't issue tickets for going 5mph over". Total BS as it's up to the officer's discretion. They typically go after the jackass who is driving in a reckless manner along with his high speed.

Yup, SCT won't do tire sizes which is ridiculous, since all the canned tune tuners have had the feature since day one. Won't do tranny shift points nor firm up line pressures either, which is why I sold the cam I was going to put in my truck. I wasn't going to give up my Superchips and it's features for an SCT & custom tune and lose the things I have now.

Dealer can re-flash the PCM to account for tires size, seen them go anywhere from refusing to do it at all to charging for an hour (even though it takes less than 5 minutes) to doing it in the parking lot and not charging at all...
