speedometer off from bigger tires
alright, got pulled over for "speeding" my speedometer said 55 but officer caught me at "60 something" he said my tires probably throws it off and i need to get it checked... i have 275/65/18 hankook dynapro MT brand new, they're nearly a 32" i was wondering what i can do to fix it and how much it would be. i have a SCT tuner coming from Sean, should be here monday. but idk if that has the tire size option or not..
SCT won't do tire size. Unfortunately. On yours, the speedometer gets its cue from the rear wheel speed sensor, so, tire size is the only thing that can throw it off. Gear ratio just doesn't matter. There are a couple different tuners that can address it, but, would probably run about the same money going to the dealership and having them do it up. Some custom shops might be able to do it.
Then, there is always something like this.

I got a garmin nuvi 265w. They go for I think 150+ new but I got mine on ebay for $80 used. I use it mostly just for the reason of my speed. That is a somewhat high model. I think any cheap gps will do you good. I've had/used 4 garmins, the oldest dating back probably close to 4-5 years, all have the speedometer feature.
When you go to court to fight the ticket, if you can prove the speedo is off they will usually issue a fix it ticket. Or you can just pay it.
Also when you go to court and claim that "my GPS said I was not speeding" make a video of the judge laughing at you, that **** will be funny.

not saying the gps will keep you out of a ticket, just saying it's more accurate then the speedo. Also, if you bring up the speedo being off because of the tires depending on the person they can fine u for faulty equipment.
Unless they have VASTLY improved GPS reliability, GPS is going to suffer from lag, the signal has to travel from thousands of miles away, hell most signals only can give you a 50 foot radius at best, and that is with clear skies.
Also I really don't think he got pulled over for doing 60 in a 55. Speedometers vary form car to car and can be as much as 5-10 MPH off either high or low. That is why 99.9% of cops will not pull you over for doing 5 or so over. Really the only time you will stopped for 5 over is in School zones. What I am getting at here is cops know people don't adjust speedos for big tires and are usually a little more giving. The OP was probably being rude and arguing with the cop and the cop defused it by say what he did.
Unlike most people I am not embarrassed to tell you about my tickets, two weeks ago I got pulled over for doing 57 in a 35 in my truck, I did not see the sign and was used to driving in California. In January I was pulled over for doing 65 in a 50, and prolly would not have been pulled over if I was not passing a Porche Carrera in a min-van.
