Default Grinding noise except in 4wd yet 4wd doesn't work

So I have a 5.9 ext cab 01 ram and when I'm driving in regular 2wd it makes a baseball in the spokes sound, not really grinding but not a good sound either, but when I put it in 4 hi or 4 low the noise goes away but the two wheels don't get power. The pedal gets extremely touchy in four low because of the gearing so that's engaging. I think it might be the cad unit gone bad but I'd like to hear your opinion before I replace more stuff that ain't broke. Thanks

I think the transfer case is shot. One of these may help, if it's not too late. http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...ase_saver.html

Yeah, transfer case makes the noise, that's problem one.

Problem two is the cad isn't doing its job. Probably just a vacuum issue.

Damn I hope not, it sounds like it is in the front (axle area) but I haven't put it on jack stands to find out, wouldn't the noise happen when I was in 4wd not 2wd? And I have a small emission leak and medium emission leak cel if that helps

Emissions leaks are a separate issue, and don't affect what you are seeing at the moment.

A lot of the stuff in the t-case is just kinda takin' up space in 2wd, putting it in 4wd alters the torque loading on various things, and if that snap ring is broken, stuff will move. And it isn't supposed to..... If you can, put the truck up on four jackstands, and run it slowly, see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from.

Oh and the noise and 4wd problem happen simultaneously, I used the 4wd yesterday and then today the noise showed up so I tested the 4wd and it didn't work

Drop the rear driveshaft, pull the tailshaft housing, and see if the snapring is gone. I bet it is......

That snap ring holds things in place on the mainshaft of the t-case. If it breaks, things can walk around..... and that is just not a good scene. Makes for all sorts of rude noises, and can lead to a grenaded t-case.
