that right there is why advance auto doesn't send employees out with the reader anymore. complete morons.
some lady sued them in small claims court (and won cause this is america after all) saying that they cleared the codes out and her car broke down.
now they just hand it to you and tell you to follow the prompts!
X2 here in Texas they will not read the cel for you anymore it is against the law to do so. You must put a large deposit/rent the tool use it then return it to get your deposit back. Been like that for a long time so i dunno how the op got an employee to come out with the tool. It was all the repair shops complaining to the gov. Why pay for a service you can get for free and some states dont allow the deposit/rental.
I dont know where in Texas you are, but i have not had a problem with them refusing to read my codes. yes most of the people that work there are idiots, and usually dont know anything about their own vehicle much less the customers...

Dont know about the other guy but when we lived in San Antonio Oreilly's would not read codes for us and tried several stores. They wont loan you the reader nor come out and read the codes for you. Its getting harder to get a cel light checked for free in any state.
