Depends what gasket it is. If its one of those newer rubber ones you can re-use it. If its a cork gasket or ATF self made gasket then no you cant..

Gaskets arent expensive anyway. $10 or so

If it is the really cool steel backed rubber gasket, and it comes off nicely, then yes, you can. If it rips, tears, rends, or shreds, or is the cheap arsed one, get a new one. I think they are right around 20 bucks and some change for the good ones.

I wonder if the intermediate shaft tip broke in the oil pump, would explain the racket.

Engine too hot is still a problem unrelated to the oil pump. I know engine oil does cool the engine, but not the parts that the coolant gets near that would be read by the coolant temp gauge. Hopefully it's not something serious like rod knock.

It doesn't sound like the "ouch that doesn't sound too healthy" racket. No grinding other than the initial start up, and no "knocking"....just a click. I'm really REALLY hoping it isn't a rod so I'm being blissfully ignorant to that and hoping that it is an easier fix [compared to what it could be...] as an oil pump.

here's a video of the truck....i took it on my phone so the sound is cruddy but yall can at least get an idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=aCnBfAeqwg0

That sounds like top end. Spring, lifter, or push rod went through a rocker.

I agree with zman, that is valve train noise. Pull the valve cover on passenger side and inspect the springs and rocker arms. If you don't see anything, suspect a push rod is bent or a lifter has deflated. all but the lifters can be replaced without pulling anything but a valve cover.

Years and years ago in the dead of winter in Southwest VA I had a 1991 S10 Blazer 4x4 (damn good in the snow) and I had to move it one dreadfully cold morning, cranked it up and it sounded just like a diesel, each time I pushed on the accelerator it would have that diesel tune to it.

I'm guessing it was just really cold and wasn't getting much oil or something like that. It was fine later on after the temps started to rise a bit.

Top end noise, basically what I would expect to hear if there was little/no oil pressure..... the lifters will bleed down, and that's what you end up with.

Maybe it's just the sound quality, but it sounds like only one, not the whole top end.
