torque converter question.
I was told by 2 different tranny guys now that my torque converter is bad. It shutters at the very last moment when the truck stops and it vibrates pretty good at anything over 70mph. I cannot even get the truck to go over 85.
truck has 2660k miles on it and has never had any tranny work. Shifts pretty erratic too. I can get a new transmission for $850, but that doesn't include the converter. the converter itself doesn't actually go bad though right> its just the clutches and everything else that does right? Do i need to buy a new converter or is this something someone can rebuild? the cost almost as much as the rebuilt tranny. Either way, 850 for a tranny, $650 for a converter puts me out $1500... and I can instal it myself I am sure. I do not mind doing it if I have to. Already has a new crate 360 in it too. Shoot everything else is new...
Should I have someone rebuild it or just buy a new one. Can rebuild a torque converter? or does it need to be replaced period. And If I d replace it, what all do i need to d a complete job.
what confused me was one tranny guy said it could just need a fluid change and another said at this point if its already shuddering and vibrating at high speeds, I shouldn't waste my money, it could just kill it. So which is it? Could changing the fluid and filter stop a lot of this problem? or would it effectively help end its life sooner. When I replaced the t-case, I lost a bunch of transmission fluid on the ground,. It wasn't discolored or black.

260K miles? On the original Trans????
If you can afford it, I would highly recommend just rebuilding it while it's out. MonteC, our resident trans guru, recommends the sonnax sure cure for ALL of his rebuilds. Shouldn't affect gas mileage at all.

I just had the filter changed and I will drive it until something dies...still shudders though,,
A decent converter for stock engine shouldnt cost more than 250 bucks. A 650 dollar converter is just way overkill.
And 850 for a "rebuilt" transmission, yeah right. Might was well buy two while your there...
