Default New Transfer Case Acting up.

I just had my t-case rebuilt. I installed it and put the linkage back right where it was, checked it and it was working great.

On the mountain today though it did something weird, something it should not have even been able to do.

As all of you dodge Ram guys know, to engage 4x4 in a dodge ram, you pull it strait down. For neutral you go right and then down again for 4 low.

When I went to put in in 4x4, it went past 4 high without me moving the stick to the right!!! then it started grinding like mad. I had to go back forward a small bit to find 4 high. Usually you just pull the thing strait back and when it hits your in 4 higher. Period! How is it possible that it went passed 4 high still on the left side?!?!!?!?

Everything works fin when its in the right spot. $ low is great, neutral does its thing. I can just pull 4 high back to far. It should not go anywhere but left from that position!

Does this mean the guy that rebuilt it did something wrong?! I do not want to go in there and demand that he fix it if I am totally unjustified. I know the linkage was set correctly, I put it both places, marked everything, split the 1 mm of difference that there was. etc etc etc, but still!! it should be effectively hitting a wall when you pull the 4x4 handle back and stop! it keeps going and grinds!

Am I wrong to assume that the re builder left something out o screwed up? I do not want to go yell at him or anything. But I am damn well not pulling that thing out again just so he can fix something he screwed up the first time. HE can remove and install it this time,...

Hope you get it sorted out.

Why go back and yell at the guy? Just take it in and explain the problem.

I don't think the transfer case has anything to do with that..... I think that is all in the shifter...

I see, just was saying to go and make sure that the TC is/is not the problem first.

thats what I am asking I guess, does the case have a problem or did I just adjust the linkage wrong. As Far As I know all i can do for the shifter is adjust how far it goes. I have no control over if it goes sideways. SO if it is going too far but only at the 4 high part, how do you adjust that? the set screw only address over all length. It is supposed to go back that far, just not until you push it right then down again.

I would guess there is a gate on the shifter, or some such, the manual just doesn't get into much detail on it though..... at least, not that I can find. Best bet would prolly be to pull the boot in the cab, and see what you can see.

If I remember correctly there should be some kind of lock on the linkage shaft that stops the shifter from going back to far. You may need to adjust it slightly.

the linkage just has one set screw and only lets you adjust the over all length of pull from 2 high to 4 low. It doesn't effect the left to right movement needed to get it into neutral and then down into 4 low. That is why I am assuming that the Case itself has something in it that guides the shifter into the different gear locations [then the linkage tells it when to stop. ]

Either way its grinding, and when I grab the front drive line and turn it[when in 2wd] its clanks each time I change direction. so if i turn the shaft back and forth something in the case goes clank clank clank clank. Wasn't doing this right after the rebuild. Is that normal?
