probably vents switching due to inadequate vacuum, due to a blown plenum, and possible some other broken vacuum lines.

Mine does it. Anything over 75mph and it goes to defrost permanently until I slow back down. Whenever I put a load on it, or floor the pedal, it switches from whatever setting I have it on to defrost. I have a new Crate motor in it too. I got a friend with a 96 extended cab that does the same thing. Not sure if it is normal, but this mechanic isnt lying to you.

But Like Hey You said, I think I may have a BAD PLENUM.

It may be common but it's not SUPPOSED to happen.

It's a vacuum leak. The more throttle you give it, the less vacuum the engine has. When to have a leak, the vacuum drops so low that it can't keep the actuator door in its proper position, which is why the OP heard a popping sound.

That pop is the vac letting go and the door slamming to the original position, which is vent only operation.

If while driving, your vents switch to defrost only, you have a vac leak, fix it.

^ what squirrels said.
its a common vac leak problem, not serious, easily fixable.

however - your seller is sort of a liar, so don't believe other things he might say, such as - this transmission's bad and all 96's are that way. well, LOL, they sort of are - but you don't want to buy something with an expensive repair in your immediate future. unless you get it very cheap....

welcome to df. good luck on the truck search.
if you happen to find an 00-01 4wd Off-Road edition - buy it. its the holy grail.
