Default How much is a turn, in mechanic terminology?

I am reading the manual for a 2001 Dodge Ram, and it reads, "Back off adjusting screw 4 turns". Well, how much is a turn? 360º, 180º, 90º? Something else I am reading reads, "back off 2 7/8 turns", so I assume it must be a precise form of measurement, to specify 7/8 of a turn.

Thank you!

360 degrees. Use a yellow crayon and make a mark on the socket.

I believe you are looking at the trans band adjustment, yes?

Backing of the lock nut 3-5 turns is just so the locknut doesn't bind to the trans case when you are torquing down the adjustment screw to the band anchor. Were it to bind, you would get a false torque on the bands anchor and backing off the 2 7/8 turns would make the band way too loose.
