Default Your info

Trans crossmember an driveshaft is the same. As the connectors they could be different, as that is a transition year for Dodge and it could have new plugs or the old ones. Engine harness needs to be changed. The TCM needs to be gone so probably a new transmission harness. Also you will need the 5.9 PCM and get it flashed. Motor mounts are different but I had some luck using the 4.7 motor mounts. Any questions PM me or reply here

Default 2002 ram 5.9

I share the OP's frustration, trying to find an '02 1500 with a factory 5.9 in a salvage yard is like looking for a needle in a stack of needles.

I used to work for a Dodge dealership, and I tried sourcing parts, and unfortunately, dodge has discontinued the engine mounts for the 2002 Ram 1500 with the 5.9 Option. I've been searching high and low for a set of used ones.

I suppose you could always make them if you had to.

As far as the PCM/ Harness goes, the harness for the 5.9, as well as the 4.7 are self contained and do not integrate with the vehicle harness, so as long as you got the harness/PCM intact, it would just be a simple swap. The 4.7 and 5.9 share the same transmission for THAT year, and that year alone, you just have to change the bell housing, so as far as the PCM goes, you wont have to change anything. It would just have to be reprogrammed for the VIN on your truck, otherwise you get ABS/Brake lights and annoying beeps everytime you start the truck. Most snap-on scan tools have the ability to program Dodge PCM's now, I know, I did it on mine when I replace the computer, takes about 5 minutes.

My dream configuration is the factory 5.9, built just a little with mild cams/bigger injectors, etc, with a 6 speed NV3550 behind it. Would make for a sweet little 1500.
I have a 2002 1500 2wd with the 5.9

what they are saying about just get another 4.7 or 5.2 is true .it would be alot easier..but it can be done.i have a 02 Dakota. 4.7 I took out engine.ent it to machine shop while they were working on it I had gotten a 5.9 an installed it.now I did change out all the wiring transmission.. an probably more stuff then I needed too.if u have help it won't be that bad..I had gotten the pcm I thought came with the 5.9. But when I put my scanner it says 1999 jeep cherokee..**** it started up

Im still working on it ..its just me working on it..all i could do is laugh because i have two transmission.new tourque converter .a brand new 4.7 engine block bore out .oversize pistons just wrap up in my garage laughing at me saying thats what u get...lol..good luck bro.keep me updated please...im heading to the junkyard.its a good day here in san Antonio tx

Default Swap 4.7 to 5.9

If anyone knows what all I will need and also has access to a 02 5.9 donar truck, I would gladly paypal for time/effort to pull and ship parts.

No one knows of a thread with this info?
hey, idk if you did this yet but I’m having the same thing, I just found a 5.9 with shorty headers, for my 02 1500 quad cab rwd with a 4-7 , I think head gasket is leaking, I have #5 &7 cylinders misfiring, I scanned, but didn’t do a compression test! So I’m thinking of replacing the motor, I can’t take how it’s running! So the 5.9 is from an 02 Dakota sport, have you looked at any of these to swap, why would a 5.9 work in a lil old Dakota but not in a 1500! If anything would , I would thing that would work! Good luck hope I helped! I haven’t gone any further than now cause I just found it! Accually hmu on fb I’ll send you the chicks info, you should get everything off her, I will just grab another beater, it’s for work

5.9 won't bolt to the trans, the 4.7 electronics are different, and won't run the 5.9. Changing the engine will require you to change the trans, the underhood harness, the PCM, and likely other stuff as well. Also need to worry about incompatibilities between the older engine/electronics, and the in-cab electronics as well. Now, the 02s DID come with the 5.9..... so, if you could find an 02 1500 that had the 5.9 originally, buy the whole truck, and transfer what you need.

Finding a 4.7 would be a LOT easier.... Car-part.com can help you with that.

There was never any steam or any sign of overheating.. Anyway, the temp gauge never went hot, but the engine got so hot it shut off on me. After looking around a bit I had found the problem. After it was all fixed, the engine cranked but ran like hell. I did a compression test and had 0 compression on #1, 90 psi on 2, 160 on 4 and 100-110 on the rest. I pulled the valve cover and saw one of the valves on #1 was not closing. The rocker is as loose as it can be.

Now, on to my real concern. I had a 2001 ram 5.9 that I had put a lot into. Had performer rpm heads, cam, TB, intake mani, headers, custom flash, etc, etc. I totalled the truck a couple years back and kept the entire drive line. motor, accessories, trans, harness, computer. I know the 02 rams cam with the 5.9 and the 4.7. Im trying to figure out what needs to be done to put this engine in. Almost all of the treads i have found about this are just telling people to either replace with another 4.7 or to get a 5.7. I have this engine sitting here begging to be put it. I dont want to do a hemi or replace the 4.7. The 4.7 pcm thats in the truck is the 3 connector type.

Here is the list of things I have found that need to be changed:

trans
wiring (will the old wire harness and pcm plug into what i have or do i have to rewire things?)
pcm
motor mounts
pcm flash to make VINs match if i dont want abs lights.

Im not sure about the trans crossmember or driveshaft. I also read somewhere that i might need a different oil pan. Should i use the 4.7 or 5.9 accessories? are there any problems making PS, AC, Alt, ect work?

If anyone has a link on this information or just any info that can help me pull this off would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
well the wiring harness from the plug in the engine compartment on the firewall will have to be unhooked and it's all one run that easily comes out so that will have to be changed. Remove the bolt and. Unplug and that takes care of your engine and computer wiring and down to your trans. I would recommend keeping all your 5.9 together since I just did this and it's super easy to swap all the wiring. I even swapped interior dash harness so I could have all the options like adjustable petals (not necessary but just another bolt and unplug etc after dash is out). Everything else should match accept maybe motor mounts depending on years. Any questions on altering motor mounts let me know (I placed a 99 5.9 with 3 bolt mounts onto the 4 bolt mounts with welding an add on for the driver and drilling the 3rd on the passenger) but 01 and 02 should be the 4 bolt mounts

yep, too bad both of those trucks are long gone. I do still have a pretty nice 5.9 (the same i was gonna swap). performer rpm heads, PPH tri-y headers, 1.7 roller rockers. cam has a bit of lope to it but i dont recall the specs. m1 manifold, 52mm hughes TB, new pushrods, i dont remember what all is in it. I fogged it and sealed it up and its been sitting in the back of my garage for a decade. it sill has all the accessories bolted to it and the belt is still on

if anyone wants it, make any offer and ill probably tell you to come pick it up. im in north charleston sc.

and thanks for the reply Nortanyo94. even though its too late for me, im sure someone else may find it useful.
