Default rear axle issues

Hey everyone, I just got a 2001 v6 2wd ram 1500 with automatic tranny. When I start from a stop it jerks & bumps until it is going at speed. It all seems to be the rear end. I grabbed the drive shaft & tried to move it all over. The u-joints seem sold, but there is a good bit of rotational play. It only has 40k miles. Does this sound like the rear end to you guys? Also, how do I identify which rear end it has & what ratio is in there?

All 1/2 tons were Chrysler 9.25's. There should be a sticker on the under side of the hood with the axle ratio.

you could have somehow managed to strip some of the gear teeth, if you even just drain the diffy oil you may see chunks and thatll answer that question. i would look into that quickly tho before she grenades!

All interesting stuff. It was like this when I bought it unfortunately, but I got it cheap. I guess I have to remove the cover to look inside. I found the gear ratio inside the glovebox - 3.55 - thanks for the input!

Looked fine inside the diff, but I did notice the tranny mount at the rear of the tranny is very loosy goosy. That is a cheap & easy fix. If that fix works, I will post again for it.
