Ok i finally am getting around to fixing this. it was actually the thermostat housing and not the bypass hose. but i replaced the bypass hose anyway. going to replace the thermostat as well. My question is do i need to clean off all of the old thermostat gasket from the housing?

Yes. If you don't, it won't seal up, and you will still have a leak.
