Default 46RE from 98 Durango to 01 Ram 1500

Hey all, I'm looking for ideas, I need to get the trans (46RE) rebuilt or replaced in my truck (listed in sig) money is real tight so i'm, looking into used tranny's. Question is 1. will a 46RE from a 98 dodge durango 4x4 work in my truck.
2. assuming #1 is possible, would it be worth $700-800 ($450 for trans + $300 plus fluid and filter for install) with 82K miles?

You'll have to change the Gov pressure sensor/transducer, Gov. Solenoid, and the TCC/OD solenoid assembly. And quite possibly the Gov body, as the switch/transducer mounts differently.

A local transmission shop quoted me 1500 to rebuild it themselves with installation. I'd say do that unless you plan on selling the truck soon. These transmissions kinda suck unless you baby them.

yeah it's looking like that's gonna be my only option, I can't get my car sold for enough to cover the rebuild cost and can't come up with the money any other way right now since I'm out on work comp and only getting 2/3 of my normal pay

Hey I don't blame you at all, I'm trying to save money by doing a manual conversion (wish me luck) Its just really hard to find a manual transmission.

Unless i just got lucky, i don't think babying it has a lot to do with it. They have a few things that are known to go bad such as the check valve, but the physical trans itself isn't really "weak". 140k miles of constant towing, stump pulling and 4x4'ing and she still shifts nice. A good rebuild should last you long past as long as you will probably keep it.

I don't think these trannys are "weak". I think someone abused this truck before I got it. Who puts a 5th wheel hitch in the bed of a 1/2 ton truck??? And then there is the electric brake module mounted under the dash....I knew it was gonna need some TLC just wasn't planning on so much all at once lol

They most likely towed with that 5th wheel trailer attached , without turning off OD too.

Oh I'm sure......only bonus was the cheap price and all the extra parts I got with the truck when I bought it....instrument panel, ecm, passenger door, and second set of tires and rims. too bad it didn't come with a second transmission lol
