Yeah, wrap that rascal. Already too many of those damn things.

Hey, are you going to replace those bearings, or did they look OK after all?

(And that's a hell of a good job you're doing; of course, my full admiration will only be bestowed when it's put back together).

I will be replacing bearings. There was a lot of rust and debris inside and I am leery of bearing life under those conditions. I have them all pulled, and needle bearing has a number. Thrust bearings are not marked so I will take them to a bearing supply place. I have a Timken Bearing catalog on the shelf in my office. I may see if I can find them there. I will be sure to post bearing numbers in the event anyone else may need this info in the future.

Once you pull the pitman arm, there is a dust seal in the bore. You can pull it with a pick. It looks like a regular oil seal, with the cup facing down.

Then there is an internal snap ring, then a plastic washer that should just fall out, then the seal is at the top of the stack.

The hard part, if not getting the snap ring out with the shaft being in the way, may be getting the seal to set square on it's seat. A deep socket may be useful, but as I was tearing mine all the way down, I did not try this. I believe this is the most common leak source on these gearboxes. Mine was so contaminated with signs of water and rust in the fluid, just replacing seals would have only bought a little more time.

Hope this helps. The FSM was a little help, but it does not follow what is needed for a completer tear down, and only address a couple of tasks like they would be done independently. And all of it is illustrated as if it was removed from vehicle.
