overdrive goes on and off
We have a 97 1500 5.9 Ram. We were towing and overdrive started to come on and off. Before the trip the transmission was serviced and the filter was very clogged. After 600 miles with a load overdrive starting coming on and off. this went on for about 230 miles, pulling over frequently to let the transmission cool down, staying under 45 on the highways. Eventually the check engine light came on and the transmission started working properly again. We reset the computer several times on the trip after turning the truck off to fuel and the computer would trip and it would work properly. We finally limped into home 1300 miles later.
Now the check engine light isn't coming on and it's stuck in 2nd gear ( I think) I read about a bad torque converter causing the overdrive to kick on and off. Before we purchase a new tranny just wanted to know if there's anything else to check since the computer appeared to correct the problem.
Where you towing with OD on to begin with? If so, you very well may have toasted the TC and the tranny is not far behind. The most likely reason it won't shift out of 2nd , is because the Governor Solenoid is clogged with all the crap from either the bands or the TC.
We weren't towing with the overdrive on. It kept flipping on and off. The push button overdrive wouldn't stay off. Kept kicking it in and out, sometimes revving up to 4 and 5 grand. Until the check engine light came on we were pulling over about every 50 miles and keeping it under 45. Reset the computer by disconnecting the battery each time. Before the problems, with a Ford explorer on the car trailer, our speed averaged about 50 mph.
First try this and see if you have any stored codes. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...code-list.html
Second, add all the info about your to your sig and profile.

well I can't check the codes since the odometer isn't digital and the OBD2 port didn't work previously.

Gave in and took it into the tranny shop. The mechanic adjusted the pressure on sumthin or other and it runs great. This is why Dodge rules right? It also threw an output speed sensor code but they need to update the scanner to read the data stream. So it's back on the road for now and we'll baby it along until the culprit is found. Oh yeah, the CEL came on but wasn't flashing before the pressure adjustment under the hood.
